Chinese Food: The Seafood Edition
Whether it’s prawns, cuttlefish, squid, shark, abalone, shellfish, or even turtle (sad face), there’s a Chinese dish for that. Steamed, grilled or stir fried, seafood is a popular — and super healthy — addition to any Chinese meal.
Interestingly, feng shui dictates that fish symbolise fortune, and that water attracts good luck and prosperity. Also, you might notice that when fish is served at a Chinese restaurant, its eyes are always open, which represents the ability to see obstacles and evil.
Traditionally, fish is cooked and served whole — bones and all! Other than being symbolically significant, this is because the meat nearest the bones is considered to be the tastiest and most nutritious. The socially acceptable (and easiest) way to eat said whole fish is to remove the backbone and place it on a side plate, before digging in. And head’s up, the Chinese typically eat the fish head as well…but promise we won’t judge you for skipping that part!
